our story

What’s our story?

Our story is not a fairytale.

But our story does include one pair of wings and a plant farm.

One summer day a long, long time ago, in faraway land called Loxley, Alabama, a plant farm was born. These days, this plant farm is no simple farm. In fact, this farm is home to the nation’s top-selling multi-season blooming azalea, the Encore Azalea.

Plants don’t reach gardens and become top-sellers without marketing, and in 2004, Kelly Smith and Corrina Murray brought their services to that Loxley plant farm — forming the marketing venture that is known today as Optera Creative.

What’s in the name? Good question.

Inspired by plant life on the farm, Kelly and Corrina are fascinated with the order of insects called Lepidoptera. Lepidoptera is the second largest order in the class Insecta and includes all moths and butterflies. Lepidopteran wing scales often produce distinctive color patterns that play an important role in courtship and intraspecific recognition. Butterflies also symbolize rebirth into a new life after being inside a cocoon for a period of time – perfect for a marketing agency set up to transform businesses into brands.

Kelly and Corrina dropped the ‘Lepido’ – and that is how Optera Creative was transformed into existence.
